Read Udin's story...
To celebrate International Orangutan Day, we would like to share Udin's story in the words of Nigel and Sara, co-founders of OVAID (Orangutan Veterinary Aid).
Udin - Rescued 2015
Udin was an orangutan who was rescued whilst we were part of the vet team at International Animal Rescue in Borneo. He was so emotionally traumatised on arrival, he had no wish to continue living, having witnessed his mothers murder, his eyes spoke of scenes no baby should ever have had to endure. We knew that if we didn’t reach into his inner world, we would not get him to survive. The only thing that kept him alive was his IV drip and our determination to not allow him to slip away, which was all he wanted to do. For ten days we tried our  hardest to give him back the will to live, to trust us not to hurt him and to get rid of that haunting sadness contained within him. We insisted on making every smoothie going, offering every tasty food item and giving him comfort, massages, love and veterinary attention.
On the tenth day something changed, he gained a sparkle which had been absent until then, he started to eat, drink, climb and play! He was then buddied up with other more confident babies and started attending baby school in the forest, where he still spends his days now, being rehabilitated in hopes one day he will return to the wild.
Our bond will never be broken in helping little Udin.
