Keeping Your Pets Safe and Calm: Tips to Reduce Firework Stress

While Bonfire night and the associated fireworks are a time of joy for humans, many animals can spend the time scared, frozen in fear and under stress. Others may choose the opposite course of action and bolt, rear up or head off at speed in the opposite direction.

In recent years more and more pet parents have become aware of the distress these loud noises can cause to their pets and have started taking preventative measures to help keep their pets safe and calm.

What can you do to reduce the stress levels of your pet during the firework season?

Firstly, get them microchipped. This should be an essential anyway but should they decide to make a run for it in the darkness, having the chipped provides a greater chance of a quick reunion. A collar with details attached is also useful in these circumstances.

Create a safe place for them in the house. One of the quieter rooms that you have. Fill it with toys and things to do (both for them and you) and allow them to use it and associate the space with being a safe and relaxing place to be. It may be beneficial to start this process well before firework season so that they have chance to become familiar with the room.

Try to exercise them in daylight, well before any fireworks will be set off and get them into their “safe place” early on, drawing the curtains and closing windows etc to minimise any noise or flashes of light.

Some Radio stations now play pet friendly music and noises which can be used to cover the sounds coming from outside.

If your animals are outside in a cage, try partially covering them with a blanket to keep external sounds down to a minimum and leave them a small gap to see out. Plenty of bedding to burrow into is also a must. If you feel that you would like to move them inside, this process must be done gradually so you will need to plan ahead.

One final option is to start playing recordings of firework sounds to your dog, when they are in a sleepy or relaxed state. Start playing them very quietly and over time increase the volume. The idea is that your pet becomes desensitised to the sounds so when they happen for real they are less of a shock.

And remember if you are having your own bonfire and display – check for hedgehogs before lighting the fire and inform any neighbours with animals when you will be starting to set off your fireworks.
