OVAID - Orangutan Veterinary Aid - Update #1

15/04/24
UK to Java with Veterinary Equipment donations

Despite the stresses of carrying 135kg of veterinary equipment and medicines the intrepid OVAID team (well Sara and me) made it from Cornwall to Yogyakarta, Java for the Orangutan Veterinary Advisory Group (OVAG) workshop in July.

Indonesian airports are very particular at scanning all luggage prior to check in, through security and again at baggage claim and OVAID’s suitcases containing an eclectic mix of JAK items always arouse suspicion. The joy of Indonesia is the constant flux of what we call ‘consistent inconsistencies’ and, true to form, at Jakarta airport where we were assured our bags were being checked straight through to our destination we were suddenly told that all six bags were being held in customs! Leaving Sara in departures I high tailed it to the other terminal, collected the bags and found myself the only, and very obvious passenger at the security scanner with 6 large bags and 6 very earnest customs men clustered around their screen. Now football is the international language and engaging in soccer dialogue sometimes distracts so in trepidation I prepared to talk Manchester United and approached the scanner. To my complete surprise the bags went straight through and they were on my trolley in an instant. A few hours later we were unpacking them at the workshop and sorting multiple medicines and equipment into neat piles.

Including all the major orangutan rescue centres we were able to successfully donate items to no less than 27 frontline wildlife conservation organisations. Most of these were caring for at least some orangutan but we were also able to help those rescuing and caring for Tigers, Elephants, Pangolin, Gibbon, Slow Loris, Sunbear and even Rhino. Many of the items we were able to bring are difficult or impossible to obtain in Indonesia so the recipients were hugely grateful. It is always heartwarming to see their smiling faces when they receive something they need urgently, often the most basic of items any U.K. vet would take for granted. We would like to say a huge thank you to JAK Marketing Ltd for their support in obtaining many of these items. We carried everything from x-ray gowns to intravenous infusion sets, laryngoscopes to swabs and much needed paramedic rucksacks for rescuing in jungle situations. Donation day was like Christmas come early.

Despite the appearance of a few COVID-19 cases, the 5 day workshop was a great success with practical input and case studies from the rescue veterinarians serving as a useful update on the latest treatments etc. for orangutan and it's critically endangered conservation status. We left with increased knowledge but only a little less baggage as many of our grateful vet friends showered presents on us. Sara is now carrying a complete Indonesian tea set around Indonesia with her!

We are currently heading to Sumatra for a month helping the vet team at an orangutan rescue and rehabilitation centre where my job will be to mentor four recent graduate veterinary surgeons whilst Sara assists with the clinic management and with nursing care.

International Orangutan Day on the 19th August is scheduled to be spent teaching emergency medicine and intensive care so it could not be more fitting for OVAID as the only orangutan specific veterinary charity in the world to be making a practical and positive impact.

We will keep you updated with blogs and hopefully some images over the next month. Internet being somewhat sporadic in the forests of Sumatra, please bear with us. Go back and read our first blog here.
